FAQ

What is Japanese curry?

Japanese curry — or karé — is one of Japan’s great everyday dishes: a thick, mellow, fragrant sauce served over rice, usually with a crisp breaded cutlet on top (the famous katsu curry) or with karaage, marinated and fried chicken thigh. Rounder and gentler than Indian curry, it has an identity all of its own. At French Karé we make ours in house, the French way.

Is Japanese curry spicy?

Not in the hot sense, no. Japanese curry is known for being gentle: fragrant, rich in spices, but very approachable, even for sensitive palates. That’s exactly why it’s such a family favourite in Japan. At French Karé you get the choice: a very mild, faintly sweet curry, or a spiced beef Japanese curry with a bit more kick.

What is katsu curry?

Katsu curry is the most popular version of Japanese curry: a breaded, fried pork (or chicken) cutlet, crisp on the outside, laid over rice and covered in curry sauce. It’s our speciality at French Karé, served both as a classic version and as our take on the katsu curry of Kanazawa.

Where is the French Karé restaurant in Paris?

French Karé is at 10 rue de Port-Mahon, in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris. You’ll find directions and the nearest metro and bus stops on our “Find us” page.

What are your opening hours?

We’re open Monday and Sunday from 12pm to 3pm, and Tuesday to Saturday from 12pm to 2pm and from 6.30pm to 10pm. Check our Instagram for any exceptional closures.

Do you have vegetarian options?

Yes. We serve a vegetarian curry made with the same care and the same house spice blend as all our other recipes.

Can I eat in or take away?

Both. Enjoy your curry with us at the restaurant, or take it with you.

Do I need to book a table?

No. French Karé currently runs without reservations: first come, first served.

Who is behind French Karé?

French Karé grew out of Thibaud’s passion for Japanese curry — the creator of Gastronogeek — a story that started in Tokyo in 2019 and was shaped by the teachings of chef Jinsuke Mizuno. In the kitchen, chef Giovanni runs the pass, bringing his experience from Michelin-starred restaurants.

Do you have halal options?

Yes! Our Karaage Japanese curry is halal: we cook French halal poultry to make our fried chicken bites.
